It's been a long time since I've stopped by the forum. Everything is looking great!
I'm having some depressing tea issues. I am now living in a college dorm and am stuck with their water. I haven't noticed the water tastes especially bad or off, though.
I make one cup of tea (which is fantastic when studying!) and it tastes perfect. However, the SECOND cup turns into this brew that honestly smells like what I imagine a foul bog smells like. It just smells and tastes like swamp water.
I've never had this issue before when I lived at home. It's only been recently. I've been using that Piao (I think) tea brewer for trips and stuff (too difficult to clean a kyuusu in a dorm).
I don't think it's the water because the first cup is GREAT. The second cup always sucks, though. I know I'm not giving you diagnosers much to go off of, so I apologize.
I can make many cups of darn good genmaicha and not have this problem. My two different kinds of sencha (all from o-cha.com), however, are the fussy ones that require more care, obviously.
Puzzled,

Since 2nd steeps and beyond are often lighter in flavor, the negative qualities of the water may be more pronounced? Or maybe you're not using enough leaf for the first steep and steeping too long.
If you run your water through a carbon filter first that can make a significant difference by reducing chlorine taste. |

Perhaps the quality of the water is being more pronounced because the second cup is weaker -- you may be on to something.
I can't afford any filters or anything, so I will either have to figure this one out or make a permanent switch to Genmaicha for a while
Thanks for the suggestion |

| You can do the water experiment using only a good sized jug of bottled water(under $2 generic). |

| The Book of Tea wrote: | | In the fifth chapter Luwuh describes the method of making tea. He eliminates all ingredients except salt. He dwells also on the much-discussed question of the choice of water and the degree of boiling it. According to him, the mountain spring is the best, the river water and the spring water come next in the order of excellence. |
So buy a large water canister and go to the nearest mountain spring, river or spring to fill it. |

Alohanema, do not post here anymore, you are banned. Nice try sliding your link in between the "m" and the "," at the end of the word "him", especially in someone else's post. |
