I'm glad these bad experiences didn't cause you to give up. I think you've found the problem, bad tea. You've also found the solution; O-Cha.com. Although I was lucky to find this site from the very beginning of my quest, I don't find it necessary to even consider other vendors of Japanese tea. I am not affiliated with this site. I am just a very satisfied customer who recognizes quality.
I started purchasing high grade Japanese tea in May 2007. I found reading the reviews by other customers to be very useful. Due to my inexperience brewing Japanese tea, and the apparent fussiness of doing so, I primarily looked for comments like "not too difficult to brew" or "comes out right every time." I figured that if I'm just starting out and purchase tea that even seasoned tea drinkers have trouble brewing, this could ruin the experience for me. I can always graduate to those fussier teas at a later date.
A possible gyokuro purchase from O-Cha might be Uji Gyokuro Kame-Giru-Shi. It is expensive, but comes in a 50 gram package, dropping the price to $27.95. This was my first attempt at gyokuro and although it didn't come out exactly the same every time, it always came out very good. I did not find it to be at all bitter, even when using 1 tablespoon per 6 ounces.
