Has anyone tried the Yutaka Midori? I must say, that this is one delicious and wonderfully performing Sencha. I had a pot this morning and what striked me was when I was drinking the 3rd infusion. The level to which it retained its tasty flavor on the 3rd infusion was impressive. In my mind, certainly a sencha worth trying. A great tea on many different levels.

I tried it last week, and... wow. That is a monster sencha. It brewed almost emerald green, intensely grassy and with a nice astringency. You're right about the re-brewing aspect, too - I got three brews out of a pot with very little flavor degradation, and I'd bet a fourth (!) wouldn't have been too different from most teas' second or third.

This is a great early-morning tea, and it might just replace the Matcha-Iri bag as my favorite "work tea." (I usually take a big travel mug of tea to work with me, and re-brew as needed throughout the day - hence I tend toward teas that can stand up to two or three re-brews.)

I agree that this one is fantastic. I got a bag of it a week or so ago and it's become my favorite. The flavor is intense.

I was thinking of getting some "Asa-Giri" and I was wondering if the flavor is comparable to "Yutaka Midori."

Hi Lee,

The flavor of the Yutaka Midori in my opinion does not really resemble the Asa Giri flavor profile. Asa-Giri is very similar to the Miyabi however.

I drink Asa-Giri a lot. I think it is a very good tea.

I just ordered the Kagoshima Sencha Yutaka Midori. I can't wait to try it !

I have usually drinked only sencha that I have bought from a local tea shop and I think the size of the leaf is quite different. Not that I have anything to complain about taste, but this leaf size thing just did bother me...

I would not be too concerned. The leaf size is a reflection of the processing, not the quality of the sencha. I have had several Shizuoka sencha in hand picked needle form leaf, but the flavor was pale by comparison to the Yutaki.

I know that only the best parts of the leaf are used also for this tea. Perhaps it also has some fukamushi mixed which would also contribute to the leaf size. Kevin would know this.

But with sencha, size doesn't matter. Rolling Eyes

And finally, the shincha for this sencha will be available in less than a week, weather permitting! buzzed

If you are used to drinking Chinese tea, I can see where this would be alarming as they use the whole leaf and curls in up into tiny balls. Japanese green tea is not like that, no need to worry.

Ok - so it should be normal - I just expected the senchas to be full leaf.

OT: are there any 'full leaf' senchas available?

Not really - the way the produce green tea doesn't lend itself to that.

To the right of the screen you will see "Sencha". Underneath it in smaller letters it says "2007 shincha" Click that and then you will see it.
