Hello,
I'd like to know about the different Chinese herbs such as the ones you can find at your local Asian market. I've been wanting to learn about this for a long time. I bought some Golden Flower brand "Assorted Herb", and don't know much about how to prepare it even after asking the store clerk more than once and reading the "user warning" on back of the box. Any comments/opinions will be very helpful.

Herbs can be every bit as powerful and as dangerous as prescription pharmaceuticals. I'd be very careful. If you can tell me your goal (what you are trying to acheive or address) and what individual herbs are in the package you bought, I may be able to offer a small measure of direction...

Yes, be very careful. Take into account medical conditions, and other 'herbs' and medications you are taking.

I don't remember all the exact "assorted herb" that is contained in the box of Golden Flower brand product. I will type it out in a few weeks at least.

The woman at the market told me to prepare it with some chicken. She said it was harmless and healthful, and to let her know how I liked it. Of course, I'm afraid to try this stuff, and have no idea what it is and how to prepare it. But, I want to learn about herbs and try them, but not get sick in the process.

Herbs... User Warnings...

Are you talking about herbs/spices for cooking? or as medicine?

In China most herbs are considered both "foods" and "medicinals." Based on the list you provided, along with the idea of cooking it with chicken, it looks like an immune support or an adaptogenic formula (used to help the body better handle stress).

For most people, this might work well, but there could be some contraindications depending on your overall energetic profile and any meds or additional herbal remedies you might be taking already...

I'm not sure what this stuff is, but it does sound like something I ran across a few years back. I was told it was best for winter and that it would keep you from getting sick i.e. wehayley's stated immune support. A Taiwanese girlfriend got it for me and she said there were two versions, one for males and the other for females. The male version contained a dried lizard, which would have prevented me from trying it had I known that in advance.

Preparation was done in a rice cooker and the remaining liquid was for drinking, one small cup per day until it was gone. Energy was definitely increased and less sleep was needed but this stuff tasted so horrible I threw it out after a couple of days. That may be another reason the store recommended cooking it with chicken.

If this is what you have, you might want to do yourself a favor and toss it. I'll stick with sencha, which has many health benefits if consumed on a daily basis and tastes a whole lot better!

OK, but the whole preparation thing with a rice cooker sounds like a good process. I'll ask them about that at the store next time, and of course keep making sencha!
