|
|
I want to start planning my trip to Japan next spring. I should be there about 5-7 days. What should I see? Where should I go? What should I do? and Where should I start (what city should I arrive in)? I am much more interested in the history of Japan than in its pop culture, but I could do with some zany Japanese pop culture.
Suggestions, please. |

You should get a railpass before you go. For sure, you should go to Kyoto.
1) Tokyo for two days.
2) Get on a bullet train and stop in Shizuoka and spend a day looking at tea fields and stuff. Get back on train and go to Kyoto.
3) Spend two days in Kyoto. Uji is next door, be sure to go there too. |

How hard is it to get to the other islands, for instance, say I want to go to Kagoshima? Wasn't that the home of Saito Takamori?
And what's the best way to use money. Traveler's Checks? Convert all my cash to yen? |

When I went to Japan, I found it most helpful to use the Post Office cash machines to get money from my U.S. account. I calculated that that was the most efficient way for my 2 week stay. You could convert all your cash to yen but that would be a lot of cash to be carrying around and if you lose it or it gets stolen, you'll incur a heavy, heavy loss...although on second though, you're only going to stay there for a week so it might be doable. I think I visited the Post Office cash machines exactly twice in two weeks.
Lonely Planet's Japan guide is very useful, I found. My partner and I planned the majority of our trip using that book. |
