First, there is a bit of caffeine it in and that can actually boost your metabolism a bit. Green tea has also been shown to give a "slight" metabolic boost above and beyond of it's caffeine content. We're not talking about "a lot" however. If one were to change nothing about their diet or exercise program and just drink green tea, over the period of several months you might loose about one pound. So when companies claim that green tea is good for weight loss, while they are technically correct, they tend to completely exaggerate the amount. That Okinawan green tea weight loss thing is a scam.
We do have several customers who have lost a lot of weight, one who lost over 150 pounds. She believes the green tea was the major reason for it so who am I to argue? But she also did change her diet and exercise regimen.
I will tell you what works very well for weight loss as I have been doing it since May 1st and have so far lost 16 pounds. I do drink a lot of iced green tea while following this program, usually while doing my workouts. This is the first time I have endorsed a product like this, I do it because I personally follow it and I know it works great. I get a lot of people who ask me about this subject, desperate, and while I will ask that they still drink our green tea, honestly THIS really works and is what I will recommend from now on:
Yes, that is an affiliate link - I'll get some "credit" if you click on it. However, it would not be on this site if I didn't personally use it and believe in it. |

I have been drinking 3 to 4 cups of green tea a day for a several months now. The health results are real. Things don't happen overnight with natural changes in your diet, such as drinking green tea, but with patience and perserverance, I am noticing a difference.
I started drinking coffee on a regular basis about 15 years ago with the increasing popularity of espresso drinks and the Starbucks revolution.
Along with the daily coffee habit I developed came weight gain and sugar cravings. Whether or not coffee had a direct affect on my change to an obese person is of course debatable. There is the reality that these weight changes starting happening right before and after I turned 30.
However, now that have stopped drinking coffee and converted to green tea, I noticed that I have not been gaining weight, and my cravings for sugar are not there anymore. I don't get the jittery irritability that comes with coffee. I miss the flavor of coffee, and the morning kitchen aroma of coffee. But the change has been worth it! And there is now the reality that I am over 40 and not gaining weight, but slowly losing it! |

I don't think there is anything wrong with having a cup of coffee now and then, so long as you don't load it up with cream, sugar, etc. It's been proven that a cup of coffee after a night of drinking helps one's liver, ha-ha. I picked up a nutritional information pamphlet at Starbucks when I was in Arizona last week, their drinks have so many calories in them it is shocking. Best bet is to either order the iced tea (which is pretty good) or have a drip coffee with artificial sweetener, etc, in it. A "Grande Latte" without sugar is over 200 calories, yikes!
Update from my August posting - I have so far lost slightly over 30 pounds since May 1st. I went and got a checkup a few weeks ago and I am now in the best shape I think I've ever been in. Blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol - all in the "teenager" ranges and I am 45. Once again, I put most of the credit on that nutritional program I espoused above. Did I mention that enough already? Hey, losing 30 pounds makes you a believer, what can I say?!? Will go into a muscle building phase here shortly. |

| I downloaded that book and read some of it. I'll probably end up being to lazy to continue, but what I did read seemed to actually be the most sensible take on dieting I've ever come across. |

I'm glad that our forum admininstrator has lost weight thorough the book promoted this website. However, I wish that admin's reply to my weight loss experiences with green tea wouldn't have replied with another plug for the Burn Fat Feed Muscle Book.
I've lost 25 pounds in the last year. I've done it though sensible diet and exercise. I succeeded to lose weight without buying any diet/exericise books, supplements or exercise equipment. I have found that green tea has been helping curb my appetite and sugar cravings. I hope other people can find benefit from green tea too. That's the main point of my letter.
If people find a book works to help them lose weight, that is great. Weight loss programs are as individual as people. It just makes me a little cynical to have an advertisement for a book in an answer to my letter. I work hard at burning fat and feeding muscle on my own! |

Perhaps I shouldn't have answered your post by plugging the book. I plug the book because I'm rather enthusiastic about it. When you have been overweight for years and finally find something that works for you, you can get that way.
Keep in mind, I have people hitting me up *daily* for weight loss advice based on some hype put out by other companies. They usually want to know which green tea works the best, etc. Who was I to give advice to people when I was overweight? All of this while drinking and having available to me the green teas available at this site. Yes, it can help, and it's good for you - of course I'm a big advocate of drinking green tea for one's health!
Here is the latest solid research statistics: If you drink 4-5 cups of green tea a day and do nothing different (diet, exercise, etc), you can expect to lose 1 pound every 43 days, or about 8 pounds per year. Yeah, it "helps" but 8 pounds in a year is not much for people who are really overweight.
Frankly, I am extremely happy to have a place to send people who need help with this subject. Since my average sale of green tea here is about $45-$50, if I were greedy I could make far more money by selling green tea to someone wanting to lose weight than I ever could by recommending that book. The book is simply extremely good information for the average person confused about how to go about losing weight properly, it's not a scam. I have personally lost and kept over 30 pounds off since May 1st by following the advice in it, I will continue to recommend it to anyone who asks. All of that said, I probably went off track when I answered your post so I apologize for that. |

Thank you for your thoughtful reply.
There are some really deceptive tea sellers online: "100 bags of oolong tea for 35 bucks, drink it because Oprah says you'll lose weight!"
WuLong? No...WuWrong! |

I actually watched that Oprah episode. It was never said green tea or any other tea would make one lose weight, it was said the switch to green tea and away from coffee was what would do it. The guest, Dr. Perone even mentioned a specific chemical (forgot what it was) in coffee and said by eliminating it would do the trick. It caused considerable headaches for me afterwards because I was bombarded with emails on the subject. I had the "green tea patches" company hit me up trying to push their stuff on my site. Then there is the Okinawan tea people, etc.
I do have one customer in particular who swears our gyokuro is what did the trick, and she sent me photos to prove it. She lost over 150 pounds, I am in contact with her and she still orders it like crazy. She also went on the South Beach diet and exercised a lot. Whatever works!
I do use green tea in my program. Mainly, I drink iced green tea during my cardio and weight training workouts, I think it helps boost my short term metabolism while I'm doing the work out. That's in addition to what I drink here on a normal basis. It's definitely "helpful." I just don't want to give the impression to desperately overweight people that drinking our (or any other) green tea alone is going to cure them. |

I get that a lot, obese customers come in looking for a oolong or "the green tea that helps you loose weight." Frequently said customers are using a motorized cart to wheel themselves around the store.
I feel Kevin's pain. After so many requests, its hard not to get cynical or tetchy on the subject of tea and weight loss. |

Otherwise intelligent people still fall for miracle weight loss cures and get-rich-quick schemes. There's not much you can do with these people. Many would rather dream of an easy way out than to actually start a process that works but requires effort.
Kevin is to be commended for not taking advantage of these poor souls and for telling it like it is. He is also to be commended for backing up his comments with something he knows really works because he has tried it with success.
I think Kevin endorses the book for the same reasons I recommend O-Cha.com; I have no affiliation with the site or profit to be made, but I believe in the product and hope to help others by pointing them in the right direction. For honest people, it really is that simple! |
